How NSF product certification supports a sustainable system for reusable food containers

Food container innovator OZZI uses NSF Certification to validate the food safety credentials of reusable food containers, as part of a sustainable system that is trusted in food service environments. Through research, design and rigorous testing, OZZI’s NSF-certified food containers help organizations stop millions of single-use containers going to landfill, save hundreds of thousands of dollars annually, and inspire a shift away from a culture of consumption.

"The NSF audit and certification process is purposeful, and it's rigorous. It provides independent validation that a product meets strict public health and safety standards. For our customers, NSF certification is the ultimate seal of approval for our food containers. We're judged by the company we keep, and we're proud to keep company with NSF!"

The Company

OZZI, based in Rhode Island, provides a sustainable system for reusable food containers in food service environments. In April of 2024, Novolex made a strategic investment in OZZI to accelerate the global growth strategies. The company was founded in 2015 by CEO Tom Wright with the aim of reducing waste by incentivizing and tracking the return of reusable containers for washing, reuse, and ultimately recycling, eliminating the need for single-use disposables.

Originally focused on a single 9x9-inch container – a standard size for food service packaging – OZZI has expanded its portfolio to include bowls, cups, and universal lids. It is also expanding its horizons – while all OZZI products are made in the US, its sales are growing in new markets, including the UK and EU.

Above all, the company continues to innovate. For example, for Wright, sustainability isn’t just about reusability – it’s about full circularity. Working with Orlando-based PureCycle Technologies, OZZI has recently developed a system to recycle its end-of-life containers back to their original state.

The challenge

Wright set out to transform the food service industry by spreading the use of OZZI's sustainable system for reusable food containers.

Numerous organizations across the world shared OZZI's sustainability mission. But while many have introduced sustainability and zero-waste initiatives, while seeking energy efficiency and carbon neutrality, Wright needed to persuade those with food service operations that OZZI's system would work for them.

He needed to convince sectors such as higher education, retirement living, the military, and business that by reducing or, ideally, eliminating single-use containers, they could make meaningful reductions in waste, divert mountains of disposable containers from landfill, save millions of dollars every year - and even change the culture of their organizations.

From the start, Wright sensed that success would depend
on trust.

“We weren’t just developing products,” he explains. “We were building credibility –  and that meant working with the best.”

The Solution

Wright realized early on that the solution to building that trust lay in applying NSF standards, and harnessing NSF’s standing as a global authority on public health and product certification.

OZZI worked with NSF to validate its reusable containers to NSF/ANSI Standard 2 - Food Equipment, ensuring it met the highest standards for safety, hygiene, and performance.

For Wright, NSF product certification wasn’t a marketing checkbox – it was the foundation for quality and legitimacy.

“NSF provides independent, third-party validation that a product meets strict public health and safety standards,” he says. “It offers more than quality assurance – it demonstates our commitment to transparency, trust, and operational excellence.”

Every OZZI design goes through rigorous NSF testing, auditing, and verification. “The process is demanding – and that’s exactly why it matters,” continues Wright. “In one meeting with a local health department, I simply said, ‘Our product is NSF certified,’ and that was all it took to win their confidence. The NSF name carries enormous weight.”

The Results

Since OZZI launched its reusable system in 2013, its relationship with NSF has been central to its growth. All OZZI products are NSF certified, a mark of quality that is valued by leading clients in contract food service and catering.

The company relies on independent reviews from NSF engineers for every new product, from design sketches to final moulds.  “That early independent feedback from NSF gives us an objective check at each stage. They identify whether the design meets the required standards, and its up to our team to resolve any issues before moving forward. It helps us catch problems sooner and keep certification on track.” says Wright.

Looking ahead, OZZI is developing new plant-based flatware, designed to meet the NSF standards for durability, washability, and safety – the next step in replacing traditional plastics. By leading with NSF certification, OZZI is staying ahead of evolving packaging regulations.

Each project reflects a shared belief in responsible innovation, compliance, and continuous improvement. “It’s not a one-anddone process,” says Wright. “We’re constantly developing new products, and NSF is there to provide us with the independent reviews we need to validate product integrity. He sums up:

“NSF has made us better, and their expertise and verification give our customers total assurance. Their name is the industry’s seal of trust.”
